UFC Lightweight Division: Quillan Salkilld's Rise and Upcoming Main Event (2026)

Quillan Salkilld is ready to step into the Octagon for his first UFC main event, facing the formidable Mateusz Gamrot. With a 12-1 professional record and a perfect 5-0 run inside the Octagon, Salkilld is a rising star in the lightweight division. But this fight against Gamrot presents a unique challenge, as the Polish veteran is a former KSW champion and one of the division's top grapplers. What makes this bout particularly intriguing is the contrasting styles of the two fighters.

Salkilld, known for his early finishes and Performance of the Night bonuses, has built his reputation on his aggressive and explosive fighting style. On the other hand, Gamrot is a master of control and endurance, using relentless chain wrestling and constant pressure to wear down his opponents over three and five rounds. This fight is a true test of endurance and adaptability.

Salkilld's decision to call for this fight himself speaks to his ambition and desire for a challenging opponent. He wants to prove himself against a tough fighter, and he believes that beating Gamrot will solidify his place at the top of the lightweight division. "He's a tough fight, and that's exactly what I want," Salkilld said. "I'm not looking to cherry-pick my way to the top. I want to fight and beat Gamrot, and it will put a lot of respect on my name."

To prepare for this challenge, Salkilld split his training camp into two phases. He started in Perth, where he normally trains, and then moved to Las Vegas a month before the fight. This change of scenery allowed him to train with a group of partners and get comfortable in a new environment. "I brought along a few training partners, got comfortable out here, and did the second half of my camp here, training at the UFC Performance Institute and Syndicate MMA," he explained.

Despite the move, Salkilld remains confident that the spotlight hasn't changed much. "The only thing that feels different is that it's going to be five rounds, so I'm preparing for that," he said. "In terms of it being the main event, I think it's cool. It's a special moment and I can't wait to go out there and experience being the main event in Vegas."

Gamrot, on the other hand, is the established name in this fight, with victories over top contenders like Rafael dos Anjos and Arman Tsarukyan. But Salkilld believes that his own record and skills are enough to prove his worth. "I've already seen myself at the top of the division," he said. "Beating Gamrot just proves it to everyone else that I belong there."

Salkilld's last fight against Beneil Dariush showcased his ability to recover from adversity. He was dropped early but managed to recover and score a first-round stoppage. This composure and ability to stay in the moment are key to his success. "I think I've always had that composure," he said. "Sometimes I get caught in the very early exchanges of a fight. It never really feels like I'm dazed and confused. I just end up on my butt, then I'm fine. I'm good at staying in the moment."

Salkilld's activity level is also a topic of discussion. He has fought twice in 2026, but he doesn't believe that being active is the secret to his rise. "I've been active because I've been able to," he said. "I've been fortunate enough to come out of my previous fights pretty much unscathed, so I've been able to get straight back into the gym. I don't necessarily think being this active is more important than fighting less often. It's just a personal preference."

Looking ahead, Salkilld isn't fixated on one name. He wants to fight whoever moves him up the rankings. "There are obviously a lot of tough guys," he said. "There's Paddy [Pimblett], BSD [Benoît Saint Denis], Arman [Tsarukyan], Charles [Oliveira], [Max] Holloway, Ilia [Topuria], [Justin] Gaethje. As long as it's someone who moves me up the rankings, I'm all for it."

Salkilld's relaxed personality has been on display during fight week, with videos of him singing making the rounds on social media. He believes that this easy-going approach is a strength in the Octagon. "I find that being relaxed, enjoying things, and having fun is a great way to approach fight week," he said. "The calmer and more confident you can be in the cage, the looser you can be, the more you can showcase your skills."

On Saturday night in Las Vegas, Salkilld will face a true test against one of the lightweight division's toughest wrestlers. He sought this challenge himself, and now he has the chance to prove why he is a force to be reckoned with. The world will be watching, and Salkilld is ready to make his mark.
